SERVICE BULLETIN #47

DATE:                    April 17, 1997

SUBJECT:              Cable Swaging Procedures

APPLICABILITY:      Kitfox™ Classic IV, Vixen, and Series 5 Aircraft

COMPLIANCE:        Mandatory

FROM:                   SkyStar Aircraft Engineering

Our Classic IV and Series 5 Builder's Tips (Chapter III Section A.) pages 12 and 13 regarding cable swaging procedures is incomplete, and the full information must be brought to your attention.

Cable sizes of less than 1/8" require only one swage crimp. However, cables 1/8" diameter and larger require MULTIPLE crimps for the swage joint to achieve full strength. Use of 1/8" diameter cable has been standard on Kitfox's since early 1993, and it is the intent of this service bulletin to urge you to inspect all nicopress sleeves on your aircraft for proper installation and to complete any unfinished cable swaging.

The illustration at right is from FAA Advisory Circular AC 43.13-1A, 'Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Inspection, Repair, and Alterations'. The correct technique for 1/8" diameter cable is to perform three crimps in the order shown to properly tighten the cable around the thimble.
